The Sipera Viper Lab, operated by Sipera Systems, of Richardson, TX, unveiled its Top 5 VOIP threat predictions, ranking what it sees as the threats with the greatest potential impact in 2008. The predictions include:

  • Increasing numbers of denial of service (DoS) and distributed DoS attacks on VoIP networks,
  • HTTP or other third party data services running on VoIP end-points will face increasing exploitation for eavesdropping and other attacks.
  • Hackers will turn their attention and tools towards Microsoft OCS, taking advantage of its UC connections to public e-mail systems, to create botnets and launch attacks.
  • Hackers will set up more IP PBXs for vishing/phishing exploits, especially targeting banking and credit accounts,
  • VoIP attacks against service providers will escalate, with hackers using readily available (and anonymous) $20 SIM cards.
